HOW TO START A CASE

Our Investigative Process

Starting an investigation should be clear, confidential and methodical. Our process begins with a limited initial enquiry, moves through case assessment and agreed scope, and then progresses to the investigative work required by the matter.

STEP 01

Initial Contact — Tell Us About Your Case

Contact us with a brief overview of your situation and what you would like us to investigate. At this stage, please do not send passwords, identity documents, confidential evidence, sensitive personal information or other highly sensitive material. We will advise you on an appropriate way to provide evidence or sensitive information if it becomes necessary.

STEP 02

Initial Case Assessment

We assess the information you provide and consider the most appropriate investigative approach. We then provide our initial recommendations, investigative options and practical advice, including what information or evidence may be required and what investigative avenues may be available.

The assessment helps define the actual question that needs to be answered. Depending on the matter, that can include identifying people or entities, establishing a timeline, preserving digital evidence, tracing online activity, examining a suspected cyber incident, assessing a device or reviewing information that may need independent verification.

STEP 03

In-Depth Investigation

Once the scope, requirements, costs and necessary arrangements have been discussed and agreed upon, we proceed with the investigation. Depending on the case, this may involve private investigation, digital forensics, cyber investigation, OSINT, evidence analysis, research, verification or other specialist investigative methods appropriate to the matter.

Throughout the investigation, we focus on obtaining information lawfully, accurately and methodically while protecting the integrity of relevant evidence. Findings are assessed in context rather than treated as conclusions merely because a name, account, image, device artefact or online reference appears relevant.

STEP 04

Third-Party Specialists & Services

Some investigations may require specialist assistance, external resources or third-party services. Where additional paid third-party assistance is required, we will consult with you first and explain why it is recommended before proceeding.

This allows the investigation to draw on additional specialist capability when justified without quietly expanding the client's costs or scope. The purpose of any external assistance should remain connected to the investigative objective and the evidence required.

OUR CORE INVESTIGATIVE PRINCIPLES

Evidence Preservation • Accuracy • Confidentiality • Detailed Reporting

Evidence preservation, investigative accuracy and clear reporting—combined with strict confidentiality—are at the core of our investigative process. Our objective is not simply to collect information, but to identify, verify, preserve and document relevant findings so that you receive a clear and professional understanding of what the investigation has established.

SPECIALIST INVESTIGATIVE CAPABILITIES

Private Investigation, Digital Forensics & Cyber Investigation Services

Private Investigations & Digital Forensics combines conventional investigative thinking with digital evidence, open-source intelligence and cybersecurity expertise. Modern investigations frequently cross the boundary between physical events and digital activity: a fraud matter may involve email records and online identities; a missing-person enquiry may require public-source research and location verification; a corporate investigation may depend on documents, devices, account activity and a carefully reconstructed chronology. Our service structure is designed for those overlapping investigative requirements.

Private Investigations

Our private investigation services support individuals, businesses and professional advisers who need facts established, information verified or a complex situation examined methodically. Depending on the lawful scope of the case, investigative work can include tracing, background research, due diligence, fraud enquiries, corporate investigations, evidence gathering, verification, missing-person matters and other fact-finding assignments.

We begin with the investigative question rather than assuming a particular technique is required. The objective may be to establish identity, locate relevant information, test competing versions of events, identify connections, develop a chronology or preserve information for later review. This approach keeps the investigation focused on useful findings instead of collecting unrelated information.

Digital Forensics & Evidence Recovery

Digital forensics is used when computers, mobile devices, storage media or other digital sources may contain information relevant to an investigation. Work can include forensic acquisition, preservation, examination of available artefacts, deleted-data recovery where technically possible, metadata analysis, timeline development and reporting.

Digital evidence is particularly sensitive to alteration and loss. Where forensic handling is appropriate, the aim is to preserve the source, document relevant acquisition and examination steps, distinguish recovered artefacts from interpretation and explain limitations. The exact work possible depends on the device, condition, security controls, ownership or authority, and whether relevant information still exists.

OSINT & Digital Footprint Investigations

Open-source intelligence, commonly called OSINT, uses lawfully accessible information to develop and verify investigative leads. Relevant sources can include websites, public records, corporate information, social platforms, archived material, images, usernames, domains and other openly available digital traces.

Effective OSINT is more than searching a name. Information can be outdated, duplicated or incorrectly associated with a person, so significant findings should be corroborated. Our work can include digital footprint analysis, identity resolution, username and account research, relationship mapping, source verification, image analysis and other forms of online investigative research appropriate to the case.

Cyber Investigations & Incident Response

Cyber incidents can leave evidence across accounts, devices, email systems, logs and online infrastructure. Our cyber investigation and incident-response services are intended to help establish what happened, identify relevant indicators, preserve available evidence and determine practical next steps after suspected compromise, phishing, business email compromise, account takeover, malicious activity or other security incidents.

Where security testing is requested, testing is performed only with appropriate authorisation and an agreed scope. Investigation and remediation are kept distinct where necessary so that evidence is not unnecessarily altered before important facts have been established.

EVIDENCE-LED INVESTIGATIONS

From Initial Information to Verifiable Findings

A useful investigation needs more than a large quantity of information. It needs relevance, verification and context. Names, phone numbers, email addresses, usernames, documents, photographs, device artefacts and public records may all provide leads, but a lead is not automatically a fact. Our investigative process is designed to separate what is known, what can be independently supported, what remains an analytical assessment and what cannot be established from the available evidence.

Chronology is often central to this work. Dates, times, communications, account activity, documents, photographs and technical artefacts can become significantly more useful when placed into a reliable sequence. In digital-forensic and cyber matters, timestamps can also require careful interpretation because systems may use different time zones, settings or logging conventions. In conventional investigations, an apparently simple date or location may similarly need corroboration before it can support a conclusion.

Evidence preservation is considered from the beginning because some information is volatile. Online material can be edited or removed; logs can roll over; devices can continue changing as they are used; cloud accounts can synchronise; and physical evidence can become unavailable. When preservation is important, clients may be advised not to alter, reset, wipe, repair or unnecessarily interact with relevant devices or accounts until the appropriate approach has been considered.

Our reporting is intended to communicate findings clearly. A professional investigative report should help the client understand the question examined, relevant evidence, significant findings, analytical reasoning and important limitations. Where a matter requires specialist legal advice or a determination that falls outside an investigator's role, the report should not pretend otherwise. The goal is useful, documented investigative work that can be understood and assessed by the client and, where appropriate, their legal or professional advisers.

SOUTH AFRICA

Specialist Investigation Services Across South Africa

PIDF provides investigative and digital-forensic services for matters connected to South Africa, including major commercial centres and communities throughout the country. Our location directory supports enquiries connected to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein and thousands of additional South African places. The investigative method is determined by the matter itself rather than by simply attaching a location name to a generic service.

Location can nevertheless be important. A South African investigation may involve people living in different provinces, companies registered in one area but operating in another, online activity that crosses geographic boundaries, or digital evidence that can be examined remotely while another part of the matter requires local assistance. During assessment we consider where the relevant people, organisations, devices, records and events are situated and what that means for the scope.

Our national service structure allows clients to begin with either the investigative problem or the relevant location. Someone looking for a private investigator in Johannesburg may have a very different requirement from a company seeking digital forensics in Cape Town or a client needing OSINT research connected to Durban. Dedicated service and location pages provide more detail about those individual areas of work, while this homepage provides the national overview of our investigative capabilities.

Where an investigation extends outside South Africa, our international contact channel can be used for the initial enquiry. Cross-border matters can introduce additional questions around jurisdiction, data access, evidence handling and the availability of local resources, so the scope should be established before investigative activity begins.

SPECIALISED SERVICES

Investigative Services for Individuals, Legal Matters & Organisations

Our broader capabilities cover a wide range of investigative and technical requirements. These include private investigations, corporate intelligence, due diligence, background investigations, fraud investigations, missing-person enquiries, digital footprint investigations, OSINT, GEOINT, computer forensics, mobile-device forensics, deleted-file recovery, cybercrime investigations, incident response, phishing and business-email-compromise investigations, account-compromise assistance, email-security assessment, authorised penetration testing, web and application security assessment, dark-web and threat-intelligence research, evidence analysis and related specialist services.

Not every case needs every capability. A focused enquiry may require only targeted verification or research. A complex case can involve several disciplines, such as an initial OSINT phase followed by forensic preservation and analysis of a device supplied with proper authority. Corporate matters may combine document review, digital evidence, public-source intelligence and interviews or other conventional investigative work. Cyber incidents may require rapid preservation first and deeper analysis later.

This multidisciplinary capability is particularly useful where the nature of the problem is unclear at first contact. A client may know that an account was compromised but not know whether the relevant evidence is on a phone, computer, email platform or another system. Another client may need to locate a person but have only an old email address, username, telephone number, photograph or historical location. Initial assessment is used to identify realistic avenues before a full investigation is commissioned.

Our services do not imply unrestricted access to private accounts, devices or communications. Digital-forensic examination, security testing and account-related work require an appropriate lawful basis and, where applicable, authorisation from the owner or other properly authorised party. Where a requested method would not be appropriate, alternative lawful investigative avenues can be considered.

CONFIDENTIAL CASE INTAKE

What to Prepare Before Contacting an Investigator

Your first message does not need to contain every piece of evidence. A concise overview is usually more useful at the initial stage: explain what happened, what you need to establish, the important dates or time period, the general location and what information you already have. If there is an urgent concern that evidence could disappear, say so in the initial enquiry.

Please avoid sending passwords, identity documents or highly sensitive evidence during the first contact unless we have advised you how it should be provided. If devices may contain relevant evidence, avoid unnecessary changes such as factory resets, deletion, software installation or repeated attempts to access damaged or compromised data. In a cyber incident, changing credentials may be necessary to secure an account, but preservation requirements should also be considered as early as practical.

When we understand the basic circumstances, we can discuss likely investigative avenues, information requirements, scope and costs. That allows the case to begin with a defined purpose and reduces unnecessary collection. If a third-party specialist or paid external service appears necessary, we will discuss that with you before proceeding.
